Not All Mulch Is Created Equal

Source: UC ANR Fire Network

Mulch is a staple in Southern California yards since it’s great for water retention, weed control, and curb appeal. But many homes are located in fire zones and what you put in your yard and where you put it can make a significant difference in protecting your home.

According to the UC ANR Fire Network, combustible mulches like shredded bark and pine needles are among the most hazardous choices near your home. Within five feet of any structure, only noncombustible materials like gravel, rock, or pavers are recommended.

Between five and thirty feet, composted wood chips and medium-sized bark chips are acceptable but should not be applied continuously and should not exceed four inches in depth.

A simple switch to rock or gravel near your home's foundation is one of the easiest fire preparedness steps you can take this season.
